I’ll Take My Food Without Mercury, Thanks
By Nicole A. Whitehead, D.C., C.A.C.C.P.

High Fructose Corn Syrup (HFCS) is an ingredient found in many, if not most, of
modern pre-packaged foods.  Soft drinks, juices, cookies, crackers, and cereals (to
name a few) contain HFCS.  It has long been known that HFCS can contribute to
obesity and diseases such as diabetes.  Nutrition-savvy families have been reading
labels and avoiding HFCS for a long time.  However, many families and children
consume tremendous amounts of this ingredient everyday.

In January 2009, a new study was released in the science journal Environmental
Health, which indicates that HFCS may be an even bigger threat than everyone
thought.  The processes used to make HFCS utilize mercury.

By Nicole A. Whitehead, D.C., CACCP

I think it’s human nature to make things complicated.  Do you want to know THE BEST
way to improve your health for today and for the future?  It’s the simplest answer, and
I bet you’ve heard of it once or twice.  It’s called EXERCISE.  A study of over 60,000

What the School Nurse Probably Missed
Nicole A. Whitehead, D.C., CACCP

Most of us adults clearly remember scoliosis screening in school, usually around age
13.  The school nurse would give us a cursory glance from the back, and then have us
bend over to touch our toes while running a hand up our spine.  Unfortunately, the
procedures haven’t changed much, and this is really not the best way to check for the
serious condition of scoliosis.  Not to mention the fact that scoliosis begins much
earlier than age 13 and can be more effectively corrected if it is diagnosed at a
younger age.  However, this article isn’t about scoliosis.

Does My Brain Look Fat?
Nicole A. Whitehead, D.C., CACCP

Actually, your brain IS fat.  A lot of people don’t realize it, but about 60% of our brain is
actually made of lipid, the fancy name for fat.  This lipid makes a covering that allows
the electrical impulses in the brain to travel quickly, like insulation on a wire.  Without
this lipid covering, our brains wouldn’t work.

Summer Yard Work A Pain?
Nicole A. Whitehead, D.C.

Summer is in full swing and we are all busy digging, planting, mowing, and clipping
away in our yards.  This is a great time to get more movement and activity than usual,
but sometimes increased activity can flare up those nagging aches and pains.  It’s
important to remember that pain is our body’s way of telling us that something is not
optimal.  This shouldn’t be looked at as a negative, but rather as a good opportunity to
solve a problem before it gets bigger.

Have a Nice Trip?  See You Next Fall!
Nicole A. Whitehead, D.C., C.A.C.C.P.

It’s autumn again, and soon leaves will be falling.  Unfortunately, a friend of mine was
recently falling, too – right down a flight of stairs.  Thankfully she was ok, but I was
reminded of how falls seriously injury people everyday.  Many older adults are
particularly at risk.   We can’t always prevent falls, but there are certain precautions
that we can take from the inside out to make ourselves less prone to falls.
